Li-Shan Chou, PhD – Lab Director
Professor of Biomechanics and Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Dr. Chou is a tenured Professor in the Department of Human Physiology and current serves as the Department Head. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Chou has authored or co-authored over 90 peer reviewed research publications and continues to be an active researcher and graduate student mentor.
Current research includes the prevention of falling among the elderly, detection of dual-task gait instability impairment, and the effects of acute and chronic concussion on gait instability and increased risk of injury.
Lou Osternig, PhD – Professor Emeritus
Professor Emeritus in the Department of Human Physiology. Dr. Osternig received his PhD from the University of Oregon, and went on to Head the Graduate Program in Sports Medicine and the Department of Exercise and Movement Science. He continues his mentor aspiring graduate students and remains active in multiple research areas.
His current research includes multi-joint accommodations to knee arthritis and total knee replacement, and recovery of motor function following concussion.
Teresa Chen, MS, PT – Ph.D Candidate
Teresa joined the Motion Analysis Laboratory after completing a BS and an MS in physical therapy at National Taiwan University in Taiwan. She aims to develop a career in the direction of mobility impairment research with transnational applications to patient care or performance. Her research interest focuses on age-related declines in cognitive and physical functions and their contributions to gait imbalance and falls and, ultimately, leads to new rehabilitation interventions.
Her personal interests include running, Olympic weight lifting, and hiking.
Frankie Qu, MS – Graduate Student
Frankie received her BS with honor in Kinesiology, with a concentration in Biomechanics in Shanghai. She was then offered a graduate teaching assistantship by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After receiving a MS with a concentration in Biomechanics/Sports Medicine, she headed to the University of Oregon for PhD study. Her research interests are muscular function and balance control in elders.
Her personal interests include eSports, traveling, swimming, reading/watching Sci-Fi and fantasy literature/movies.
Will Pitt, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS – Ph.D Candidate
Will is a US Army Physical Therapist and former Army Ranger working on his PhD studies here at the U of O. He completed his PT training at the Army/Baylor University DPT program. He joins the highly regarded concussion line of research conducted over the past 10 years in the Motion Analysis Lab. The aim of his current research is the development of a low cost, smart phone based tool utilizing wearable accelerometers to diagnose and manage concussion rehabilitation in the clinical setting.
Will’s personal interests include spending time with his family, snow and water sports, golfing, and hiking.

Spencer Smith – Undergraduate Research Assistant
Spencer is an undergraduate sophomore at the University of Oregon in the Motion Analysis Lab. Currently, he is double majoring in human physiology and psychology and minoring in chemistry. His post-graduate plan is to pursue a career in the medical field. Personal interests of his include hiking and playing sports.
Haley Segelke – Undergraduate Research Assistant
